Monument Settings is a creator of outdoor space products. It could be said, more directly, that we are a manufacturer of outdoor furniture. That simpler version puts us in the same category as the makers of molded resin patio chairs and redwood picnic tables. In no way is our product line comparable to that class of furniture. And it is the goal of Monument Settings’ owner, Jona Kavanaugh to not only create elegant outdoor furniture, but to foment a quiet revolution -- the movement of living and dining spaces into the great outdoors. With the use of most products categorized as outdoor furniture, the scenario is closer to a camping experience than a living or dining experience. The goal is simply to supply a place to sit when visitors are too tired to stand or a place to sit and eat when they won’t all fit in the dining room.

Jona, a Humboldt native, wants to migrate the elegance of quality living and dining spaces into the great outdoors -- to create spaces where homeowners will choose to stay and enjoy the fresh coastal air, the view from the bluffs, the migrating birds, the abundant stars. Toward that end he is creating a product line of polyurethane-molded concrete furniture that has the water-resilience, the smooth surface and sheen of marble -- and which can be custom-cast to resemble almost any form of statuary. This mode of outdoor furniture production transforms said product into a commodity to admire and a complement to enhance the surrounding architecture and landscaping.

The standard array of pieces which Jona can create in the shop includes four different bench styles, including bench-ends with arm rests, and the options for table tops and bases are equally numerous. Maximum shop-built length for the horizontal-run pieces (bench seats and backs, table tops) is typically 38 inches, but on-site construction makes virtually any size and shape possible. Into these custom-sized tables and chairs, Jona can introduce any number of embellishments, including gravure, embossing, embedding of artifacts, and custom shapes -- all courtesy of the polyurethane mold casting process.
